It can be daunting to memorize all the auricular points in Dr. Li-Chun Huang's system. Luckily, she has methodically organized the point locations by the major organ systems.

To summarize Dr. Huang's auricular system, you can project the image of a fetus onto a lateral view of the ear. While developing in the womb, a fetus is normally in an upside-down position, with the head pointing downward and the legs and feet pointing upward. Reflecting this image, auricular points in the lower part of the ear map to organs and areas in the top part of the body, and vice versa. This functional organization makes it easier for us to study and learn Dr. Huang's comprehensive auricular system.

Dr. Li-Chun Huang's auricular medicine derives from the traditional TCM auricular acupuncture system with variations discovered through her decades of extensive clinical research. To follow her system, it is beneficial to familiarize ourselves with the ear's anatomy.

As a general rule of thumb, points on the left ear correspond to the left side of the body, whereas points on the right ear correspond to the right side. For example, the Breast point on the right ear corresponds to the right breast, whereas the Breast point on the left ear corresponds to the left breast.

The same principle applies to internal organs as well. For instance, the Lung points on the right and left ear correspond to the right and left lungs, respectively. Furthermore, for organs located in one side of the body, their corresponding auricular points are found only in the ear on that side. For example, points for the bile duct, gallbladder, and appendix are found only on the right ear, and points for the pancreas and sigmoid colon are found only on the left ear (as well as the point/area for two additional conditions: diabetes and splenomegaly).

This mapping relationship becomes complicated when you deal with organs not centered on the midline inside the body. Examples include the heart, stomach, liver, and duodenum - to name a few. For these organs, although you can find their corresponding points in both ears, one ear (the one on the same side of the body that contains the majority of the organ) is more critical for both diagnosis and treatment than the other. For heart-related problems, for example, you should mainly use the Heart point on the left ear to diagnose and treat the associated conditions.

This lateralized mapping correspondence in auricular medicine can be especially beneficial for us practitioners. Not only can we identify the problem side of the body through the ear with the pathology, we can also deliver auricular treatments with higher specificity and precision. For example, if you have a patient with problems in the ileum, the issue should be revealed during diagnosis by the Small Intestine point on the right ear (and not the left ear), and you can use the same point/ear to treat the condition.
